Geralt of Rivia Confirmed for The Witcher 4, Though His Role May Be Limited

The Witcher 4 will include Geralt of Rivia, according to long-time voice actor Doug Cockle, though the fan-favorite character may not play a central role in the upcoming game. CD Projekt Red (CDPR) originally confirmed that The Witcher 4 was in development in early 2022, revealing that the game—codenamed Project Polaris—will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and will kick off a new Witcher trilogy. This announcement implied that Geralt would no longer be the main protagonist.

Despite this, it seems that Geralt will still make an appearance in Project Polaris. In a recent video on the YouTube channel Fall Damage, Cockle, the voice behind Geralt, hinted at the character's return. Around the 7:20 mark, Cockle mentioned that while he "cannot say anything about" the fourth Witcher game, he did confirm Geralt's involvement. "What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game, we just don't know how much, and the game won't focus on Geralt," he stated.

Cockle's comments suggest that Geralt's presence in the game is an open secret, although CD Projekt Red has not officially confirmed this. Previously, the closest hint came from The Witcher 4 director Sebastian Kalemba, who, in a December 2023 interview with Italian publication Lega Nerd, hinted at Geralt’s potential return, describing Project Polaris as an entry point for new players while still catering to long-time fans eager to continue "Geralt's adventures."
However, despite Cockle's confidence in Geralt's return, he admitted that he has yet to see the game's script, though he playfully suggested he could be "lying through [his] teeth" about that.

CDPR recently confirmed that Project Polaris entered active development in 2024, with more than half of the studio's staff already involved as of late 2023. Given that voice recording typically occurs during the middle stages of AAA game development, it's likely that recording sessions for Project Polaris haven't begun yet. However, the suggestion of Geralt's return indicates that The Witcher 4 may not take place long after the events of The Wild Hunt.
